Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak.
- Thomas Carlyle

Happy Monday, fam! Today is the day Bitcoin surpasses its previous longest bear run streak. The 2013 to 2015 bear run lasted 410 days. The ongoing 2017 to 2019 bear run is now at 411 days! 😲 This is one long and brutal crypto winter...Brrr. ☃️

Today in history (1789), the first president of the U.S., George Washington, was elected! On this day, he became the first and only president to be unanimously elected by the Electoral College (a feat that has yet to be replicated). He repeated this notable feat on the same day in 1792. 🤯

In today's newsletter, we will be covering B2C2 receiving an approval from U.K.'s FCA to offer crypto derivatives, crypto exchange QuadrigaCX unable to retrieve its funds and a new crypto malware that targets Apple Mac computers.

Please don't forget to answer the polls down below too! It's a great way for us to interact with you all and hear what you have to say. 💭 Happy reading! 📚

Persisting 😣
Over the weekend, total market capitalization rose to a peak of ~$115.9 billion on Saturday, before gradually dropping back down to the ~$113.5 billion levels on Sunday. It was a relatively quiet weekend, as total market capitalization stayed within a ~$2 billion range.

BTC also traded within a tight range over the weekend of ~$3,450 and ~$3,515. It continues to be in a downward bearish wedge/ trajectory, and its 21-day EMA line appears to be acting as a resistance ever since it began on this pattern. BTC will likely retest its 2018 lows of ~$3,200 soon. 📉

Changing winds 💨
An over-the-counter trading firm, B2C2, has received an approval from U.K.'s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to offer crypto derivatives, namely contracts for difference (CFDs), in the country. 🤝 This approval is notable because the FCA, which is the financial watchdog of the U.K., has previously issued warnings over crypto CFDs.

CFDs allow traders to speculate on the future price changes of specific cryptos, and potentially profit by going long or short. B2C2's CFD product caters to Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin cash (BCH), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC) and XRP (XRP).

According to the founder of B2C2, Max Boonen, this CFD product offering will allow clients to "gain derivative exposure to the cryptocurrency markets” while avoiding the “risks associated with crypto custody.” 👌🏻

Hmmm 🤔
After the death of its founder Gerry Cotten on Dec 9, crypto exchange QuadrigaCX has been unable to access ~$145 million of its digital assets, leading to a liquidity crisis. 💸

QuadrigaCX kept most of its assets in cold wallets, which are secured by digital security keys. However, Cotten was the person solely responsible for the wallets and keys. 🤦‍♂️ Cotten's wife, Jennifer Robertson, reportedly stated in an affidavit, “I do not know the password or recovery key. Despite repeated and diligent searches, I have not been able to find them written down anywhere.”

However, QuadrigaCX users remain highly skeptical about all this, as evidenced by its subreddit channel. Cotten supposedly died at 30 from Crohn's disease (usually not fatal), while in India building an orphanage. His statement of death is not an official death certificate and comes from a funeral home, one that some QuadrigaCX users attempted to call to no avail. Additionally, Cotten was in India at a time when he was in the middle of a court battle with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CBIC), and signed his will less than two weeks before he died. 🤔

Beware malware 🛡️
According to a report by cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks, there is a new form of malware that targets Apple Mac computers such that it intercepts and steals browser cookies information related to crypto exchanges and wallet service providers’ websites visited by the victims.

The "CookieMiner" malware targets sites like Binance, Coinbase, Poloniex, Bittrex, Bitstamp amd MyEtherWallet, and domains with the word “blockchain” in them. It attempts to steal credit card information, saved usernames and passwords in Chrome, iPhone text messages that are backed up to iTunes and crypto wallet keys, which it collectively uses to navigate past the authentication processes of crypto exchanges. 😠

The malware also changes the victims' system configuration to maliciously load crypto mining software to mine a crypto called "Koto". According to Palo Alto Networks, the firewall program called "Little Snitch" prevents CookieMiner from working.

Blockchain term of the day 🤓 - Lightning Network

The Lightning Network is a "second layer" payment protocol that operates on top of a blockchain. Theoretically, it will enable fast, scalable transactions between and across participating nodes, and has been touted as a solution to the Bitcoin scalability problem.

Other news 📰
  • The director of data science and risk at Coinbase, Soups Ranjan, has left the crypto exchange after a 3.5 year tenure. 👋
  • Cryptocurrency custody startup Casa has just launched a browser extension for its lightning network-enabled Bitcoin node.
  • During a public call on Friday, Ethereum protocol developers elected to hold off on a decision to implement code that would reduce the advantage of high-powered ASIC miners competing for the network’s rewards.
